Status of Seafloor Mapping in Oregon

Scientists from Oregon State University and Northwest companies are currently involved in a seafloor mapping effort to developing an improved picture of the ocean floor from a depth of 10 meters out to three nautical miles, the boundary of Oregon’s territorial sea.

This project has been made possible by an allocation from the 2009 Oregon Legislature combined with funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Researchers at Oregon State University have developed a plan for mapping priority areas within the Territorial Sea with the funds that are available. The resulting maps will cover about 34 percent of State of Oregon waters and 75 percent of its rocky reef areas. The project is expected to be completed in late 2010.
