Title: Historic Oregon Territorial Sea Bottom Sediment Samples from NOS Hydrographic Survey Smooth Sheets, 1868-1958
Edition: 1.0
Geospatial Data Presentation Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
Database of 11430 bottom sample labels captured from geo-referenced historic NOS Survey "Smooth Sheets" in the vicinity of the Oregon Territorial Sea from the period 1868-1958. Incudes preliminary Lithology interpretation, and survey source information.
Purpose: Data was captured to help improve knowledge of bottom characteristics within the Oregon Territorial Sea. Previous to this effort, fewer that 300 bottom samples were available for this same area.
Supplemental Information:
A Brief History of Hydrographic Surveying, by NOAA's Office of Coast Survey: NOAA's Office of Coast Survey conducts hydrographic surveys to measure the depth and bottom configuration of water bodies, to produce the nation's nautical charts and ensure safe navigation of U.S. waters. The surveys also identify sea floor materials, dredging areas, cables, pipelines, wrecks and obstructions, and fish habitats. They support a variety of activities such as port and harbor maintenance, coastal engineering, coastal zone management, and offshore resource development.
For centuries, hydrographers used instruments such as chronometers, sextant fixes, and lead lines to determine time, position, and depth. Hydrographers collected depth data by dropping a hand-held lead line over the side of a vessel. Position was determined by three-point sextant fixes to mapped reference points. The time, sextant angles, and depth were recorded by hand. This process was labor-intensive and time-consuming, and while the data were accurate, the soundings were limited in number and did not cover the entire ocean floor in an area.
Processing this data involved manually correcting the depth for tide and plotting the reduced depth and position on a boat sheet with a three-arm protractor to produce a piece of paper showing positions and depths of survey observations. This "hydrographic smooth sheet" was the foundation for the nautical chart.
The mid-20th century was marked by advancements in electronic positioning and depth finding instrumentation. In the 1930s, echo sounders, which used sound waves to determine depth, were introduced. Beginning in the 1950s, electronic positioning systems allowed surveyors to simultaneously record two ranges from known points ashore. While these advances were significant, data were still recorded manually and the final smooth sheet was an analog product.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report: Attributes have been reviewed for accuracy and corrections made where necessary
Logical Consistency Report: The data are consitent.
Completeness Report: The data are complete for bottom sample labels taken from the smooth sheets of the stated source surveys, excluding labels for 'Grass' and 'Coral', which are available separately.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Due to the age range of the source smooth sheets (1868-1958), the variety of source scales, and the unknown horizontal accuracy of the original field-recorded bottom sample labels, it is difficult to give a difinitive estimate of true horizontal accuracy of the dataset. However care was taken in the geo-referencing, digitizing, and quality control phases of this project to ensure that all labels were captured in a manner that was faithful to the accuracy of the original recorded location.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: While sounding depths are available from NOS for the majority of surveys included in this compillation, not depth data is explicitly attached to this data set.

Process Step:
Process Description:
The scanned NOAA smooth sheets were processed in ArcGIS v9.2 using the Georeferencing Tool. Control points were created to tie a sampling of latitude/longitude crossing shown in the image to the corresponding crossings in projected space. For smooth sheets created in NAD 27, the data frame projection was geographic, NAD 27. These images transformed directly to the proper location and no further rectification occurred, other than to reproject into geographic NAD 83 for feature capture. For smooth sheets not created in NAD 27, the data frame projection was geographic, NAD 83. After transformation, offsets between soundings, triangulation points, or NAD 27 grid shifts shown on an image and the corresponding points in projected space were determined. An average of the offsets was used to adjust the transformation, the transformation that permitted the best alignment of image features with projected features was used for rectification.

Process Description:
The bottom sample label locations and rock cartographic codes were head's up digitized in ArcGIS v9.2 from the Geo-referenced NOS smooth sheets to create point shapefiles. Data frame projection used for capture was geographic, NAD 83. Data fields were added to record the source survey, the captured label, and the calculated X,Y coordinates of the label location.

Process Step:
Process Description:
The point shapefiles for each survey were reviewed independantly from the data capture process, and compared for accuracy with the geo-referenced smooth sheets. Labels that were missed in the previous stage were added, position corrections were made for misplaced labels, and label attributes were corrected where they deviated from the source. After the points from each individual survey was reviewed separately, the results from all surveys were merged into a single point file. At this stage the lithology interpretation column was reviewed for consistency across all surveys, and interpretations were standardized where necessary. Finally, 70 points representing "Grass" or "Coral" were removed from the compliation to be released as separate files if necessary.
